Laser Acne Treatment at The Langdon Center in Guilford: Results for hard to treat acne

Safe & Effective / Minimal Downtime

Best treatment for:
Individuals with difficult-to-treat acne.
The Langdon Center uses many procedures to treat acne.  Two options use a laser or a laser-like device called intense pulsed light (IPL). Photodynamic therapy combines a medication applied to the skin surface followed by IPL treatment to shrink the sebaceous glands beneath the skin.  Another specialized type of IPL called Broad Band Light (BBL) is used directly on the skin to reduce oil gland activity and bacterial counts, both of which improve acne. Facial scarring that results from acne is best treated with fractional laser resurfacing such as the Fraxel laser or the Fractional CO2 laser, both available at The Langdon Center.

What is Laser Acne Treatment?
Laser Acne Treatment employs laser or IPL light energy to shrink the sebaceous glands beneath the skin or to reduce bacterial counts.

Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands in the skin. The sebaceous glands release sebum (oil), which can clog the pores, leaving the sebum trapped beneath the skin.  The resulting black and white heads (comedones) may cause the bacterium Propronibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to flourish, which can cause inflammation, pustules and nodules in the skin.

Is a Laser Acne Treatment painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during an Laser Acne Treatment.

How long is a typical Laser Acne Treatment?
Acne Laser Treatment time varies based upon the areas being treated. Photodynamic therapy takes longer because the applied medication need time to absorb into the skin.

What are the side effects of Laser Acne Treatment?
Laser Acne Treatment has mild side effects.  Depending on the types of treatment utilized patients may experience slight skin discoloration and minor swelling.  Downtime is minimal afer BBL treatment and most patients can resume normal activities immediately. After photodynamic therapy patients must avoid direct sunlight for 36 hours and may experience swelling, redness and flaking skin for a few days.
