Commonly Asked Questions about Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing at The Langdon Center in Guilford

What is Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with downtime of only three or four days. Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, in which layers of skin are removed over the entire treated area, this treatment is fractional. Small spots of laser energy treat about 20-30% of the surface area in a typical Fractional CO2 Laser treatment. The primary advantage of the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser is the increased contraction of treated skin that this laser wavelength produces. As explained in Dr. Langdon’s book Understanding Cosmetic Laser Surgery the CO2 laser ablates (removes) layers of skin and causes collagen in the skin to shrink, thus producing contraction of the treated skin. Skin contraction is especially advantageous in patients who have significant sun damage and loose, wrinkled skin.

Where can Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing be used?

The most common areas treated with the Fractional CO2 Laser are the face and neck.

How long does the treatment take?

A treatment of the entire face takes approximately 90 minutes, including administration of local anesthesia.

How soon will I see results?

Obvious results can be seen after just one treatment with continued improvement over time. Frequently, two to three treatments are recommended, separated by one to two months, in order to achieve optimal results.

What will I experience after the treatment?

Because this laser is ablative, there can be pinpoint spots of bleeding a few hours after the procedure; these are removed by simply cleansing the face. For the first three or four days a moisturing ointment such as Aquaphor® is applied. Side effects usually include mild swelling and redness. Mild swelling should subside within a few days, and redness usually fades over two to three weeks. There is limited, if any, risk of infection or scarring.

How Much Does Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing cost at The Langdon Center in Guilford?

People have varying degrees of sun damage and every person’s skin requires a different number of treatments for the best results. Please contact us for a specific cost.
