ResurFX (Fraxel)

Non-Surgical Laser Treatments ResurFX (Fraxel)

Healthy, vibrant skin is something we all want. But most of us have at least a couple of frustrating skin issues, especially as we age. The Langdon Center offers many effective treatments to rejuvenate your skin and address common conditions. One of our most versatile options is laser skin resurfacing with ResurFX, a treatment many patients know as Fraxel.

What is ResurFX?

ResurFX is a quick, gentle laser procedure that can improve the overall appearance of your skin. Similar to the well-known Fraxel, ResurFX is a nonablative fractional laser.

Laser resurfacing with ResurFX is an excellent choice for improving sun-damaged skin, including discoloration, dark spots, wrinkles, and fine lines. It can also fade moderate to mild acne scarring. Other benefits of this treatment include improvement in the tone and texture of the skin and reduction in pore size, all without the prolonged downtime associated with traditional laser resurfacing.

We most often use ResurFX to treat the:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Décolleté
  • Hands

However, those aren’t the only treatment areas for this versatile laser. ResurFX laser treatments are safe for all areas of the body and can even improve stretch marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, in which layers of skin are removed over the entire treated area, lasers like Fraxel and ResurFX perform fractional resurfacing. Tiny microscopic spots of laser energy treat about 20% of the skin’s surface area in a typical ResurFX treatment. These tiny spots of laser energy penetrate deep enough into the skin to remove even deep pigmentary problems, such as melasma, and stimulate new collagen production, smoothing wrinkles and acne scars and shrinking pore size.

The ResurFX laser is part of the M22 platform, which also houses an IPL device. The laser’s handpiece features a CoolScan™ scanner that monitors the temperature during treatment and helps keep your skin cool to prevent discomfort. A ResurFX treatment normally takes around 20–40 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

While each patient’s experience varies, fractional lasers like ResurFX offer the benefits of speedy healing and minimal downtime. Side effects are usually limited to mild swelling and redness. The swelling should subside within two to three days, and redness usually fades over five to seven days. There is little to no risk of infection or scarring when ResurFX is performed by an experienced professional like Dr. Langdon.

Most patients resume their usual activities immediately after a ResurFX treatment or the next day. Your skin may appear sunburned and will be extra sensitive, so avoid sun exposure while it heals. Using cold compresses and gentle moisturizers can alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

Our patients enjoy obvious results after just one ResurFX treatment, with continued improvement over time. We usually recommend four to six treatments, separated by two to four weeks, to achieve optimal results. The number of treatments you’ll need depends on what skin conditions you’d like to address. For example, concerns like acne scars typically require more treatments.

Once you achieve your desired results, they should be long-lasting with proper skin care. Many patients enjoy the benefits of ResurFX for up to two years. Protecting your skin from sun damage and leading a healthy lifestyle are essential for long-term improvements. You can return for maintenance treatments as needed or supplement your laser resurfacing with other skin rejuvenation treatments like microneedling or PhotoFacials.

ResurFX is typically best for patients with light skin tones. Many people seeking skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime are good candidates for ResurFX or Fraxel treatments. This laser treatment can improve a wide range of skin concerns, including sun damage, wrinkles, and acne scars. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Langdon will assess your skin and help you determine if ResurFX is right for you.
