Liposuction vs. Laser Liposuction

January 3, 2020

Advancements in cosmetic surgery can be confusing for people who are considering liposuction. There are several different types of liposuction, done with or without the “assistance” of devices such as lasers. Dr. Langdon is pleased to offer a variety of liposuction options that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Keep reading for a brief overview these options.

Liposuction

In all liposuction procedures, the area to be treated is numbed with tumescent local anesthesia so that there is no pain or discomfort. After numbing takes full effect, Dr. Langdon makes tiny incisions in the skin to insert a cannula, or small tube, designed to gently suction fat tissues.

Using gentle back and forth motions, Dr. Langdon removes fat and “sculpts” a more flattering body shape. Patients generally find the procedure very tolerable and typically return to work after only a few days. When a laser or other device is used, the energy is delivered to the fat layer either before or after liposuction is performed.

SlimLipo™ and SmartLipo™

SlimLipo™ technology doesn’t just heat the fat, it actually melts it. SlimLipo’s™ 924 nm wavelength of laser energy is highly absorbed by adipose tissue, liquefying the fat for easier, less traumatic extraction, which reduces swelling and bruising after the procedure.

A second wavelength, 975 nm, is delivered at the same time and helps tighten the skin through collagen contraction, resulting in a smoother shape. Dr. Langdon can more precisely extract unwanted fat and shape the treatment area for a smoother, more sculpted result.

SmartLipo™ is another laser option that works similarly to SlimLipo™. This laser includes three different wavelengths (1064 nm, 1319 nm and 1440 nm). The 1064 nm wavelength has the added advantage of minimizing bruising from the procedure.

ProLipo™

ProLipo™ delivers the ideal amount of laser energy to the fat layer right before liposuction. This laser also delivers wavelengths of 1064 nm and 1319 nm. Once the area to be treated is numbed with a local anesthetic, a fiber optic cannula is placed in the fat layer. The laser energy delivered through it is then evenly distributed throughout the area of treatment. This is a painless treatment because of the tumescent local anesthetic that’s used. It comes with minimal downtime that’s only a few days.

Renuvion Skin Tightening

Loose skin is a concern for many patients who have excess fat extracted through liposuction, and it doesn’t always bounce back as fast or as much as we’d like. That’s where Renuvion technology comes in.

Renuvion is a minimally invasive treatment that delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the subcutaneous (fatty) layer after liposuction has been performed. This energy is very effective at shrinking connective tissue, which results in tightening of the overlying skin in the sculpted treatment zone.

I had Dr. Langdon do my liposuction procedure on my upper & lower abdomen as well as my flanks. They were extremely accommodating to my needs as far as managing my nausea & pain. I was given nausea & pain medication as soon as I started to not feel well. I walked out feeling VERY happy with my results even before the swelling went down. Very sweet staff of nurses as well. HIGHLY recommend to anyone who’s looking to make a change to feel more comfortable in their own skin. Couldn’t be more grateful!
