For those seeking to remove areas of stubborn diet-and-exercise-resistant fat but are wary of loose, sagging skin post-surgery, take note: a new study reported on Web MD proclaimed that laser liposuction has skin-tightening advantages over traditional, more invasive liposuction procedures.

Researchers analyzed the extent of skin tightening in nearly 2,200 men and women who underwent laser lipo in differing body regions, including the belly, thighs and arms.

Three months after laser liposuction, researchers found that patients had between 20 and 80 percent skin tightening, resulting in skin contraction within 20 and 80 percent of what would be expected for the volume of fat removed. In other words, skin “bounced back” and tightened up.

The final verdict? The amount of skin tightening with laser liposuction is about fifty percent greater than what can be achieved with traditional liposuction.

Whereas traditional liposuction uses a hollow tube-like device to suction out solid fat pockets, laser-assisted liposuction melts the fat with a laser prior to removing it. The laser also stimulates the contraction of collagen in the subcutaneous layer and skin, which in turn promotes skin tightening.

Patients who have looseness of the skin overlying the area to be treated with liposuction are good candidates for ProLipo at The Langdon Center. Certain body areas in which maximal tightening (contraction) is needed after liposuction are best treated with ProLipo laser assistance. These areas include the upper arms, the lower abdomen, the anterior (front) thighs and in some cases, the neck.
