Conditions Body Cellulite

Does the skin around your butt and thighs have a dimpled, lumpy appearance? Cellulite is a common cosmetic concern, especially among women. Many people turn to diet and exercise to try and get rid of cellulite, only to feel more frustrated than ever when these efforts yield little difference. If you’re tired of cellulite and looking for an effective solution, it may be time for a consultation with board-certified cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist Dr. Langdon.

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a skin condition that results in uneven or dimpled skin. It most commonly occurs around the buttocks and thighs, but you can also get cellulite on your hips, abdomen, breasts, or upper arms. Though cellulite is completely harmless, many people don’t like its effect on their appearance.

Cellulite occurs when fat buildup creates tension in the connective fibers under your skin. When fat pushes against these fibrous bands, they pull down on the skin, creating a dimpling effect. If your skin is thin, cellulite may be even more pronounced because the corded connective tissues are visible under your skin. The appearance of cellulite is often compared to an orange peel or cottage cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

Though cellulite is related to fat buildup, you don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite. People who are a healthy weight or thin can also have the condition, though it’s usually less noticeable.

Women more commonly have cellulite than men because of their body fat distribution. Cellulite may be most noticeable in older women with a higher body fat percentage, but adults of any age and body type can develop cellulite. Some of the risk factors associated with cellulite include:

  • Genetics
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle
  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy
  • Thin or aging skin

Healthy habits, exercise, and weight loss can help minimize cellulite. However, if you are already physically fit but still have cellulite or if these efforts haven’t yielded your desired results, further treatment may be necessary. Some people see minor improvements with over-the-counter creams, which typically aim to tighten the skin. This can reduce the appearance of cellulite, but it doesn’t actually address the underlying fat and connective tissues.

If you’re looking for long-lasting and effective cellulite reduction, the Langdon Center can help. Dr. Robert Langdon is a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon who can help you find the cause of your cellulite and the best solution.

Cellulaze™

This minimally invasive laser treatment targets the root cause of cellulite to effectively reduce it. Cellulaze™ uses thermal energy to liquefy fat, promote collagen production, and loosen fibrous bands. By releasing the tension in these connective tissues and boosting the skin’s health and firmness, Cellulaze™ smooths out the lumps and dimples.

Body Contouring and Fat Removal

If excess fat contributes to your cellulite, reducing fat may be the first step to improving it. Patients with stubborn fat that hasn’t responded to weight loss efforts may benefit from a body contouring treatment to reduce cellulite. Depending on your needs and goals, Dr. Langdon performs several surgical and non-surgical body contouring procedures.

Patients seeking a convenient, non-surgical option to eliminate stubborn fat and sculpt their figures may benefit from CoolSculpting®. For more dramatic slimming results, Dr. Langdon may recommend liposuction.
