Non-Surgical Injectables Dysport®

Most of us are familiar with Botox®, the popular injectable that wards off fine lines and wrinkles. But Botox® is just one of the many brands of botulinum toxin injectables. At the Langdon Center, we offer multiple neuromodulators to ensure that we have the best option for each patient. One of these options is Dysport®, an FDA-approved treatment for frown lines.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is an injectable cosmetic treatment that’s used to reduce dynamic wrinkles. Like Botox®, its active ingredient is botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin that blocks signals between nerves and muscles to paralyze the muscle temporarily.

Whenever you laugh, frown, concentrate, or squint into the sun, your facial muscles contract, and your skin creases. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity, and those creases deepen into lines that become forever etched on your face. Frown lines between your eyebrows can become particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look angry or worried even when you’re not.

Frown lines and other wrinkles caused by and worsened during facial expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. By temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles, Dysport® can smooth out those lines, restoring a more youthful, less stressed expression to your face.

Dysport® is ideal for treating:

  • Frown lines, also known as glabellar lines or “11s”
  • Crow’s feet wrinkles
  • Forehead wrinkles

Frequently Asked Questions

One of the primary advantages of injectable treatments like Dysport® is their convenience. You can have your quick injection appointment on a lunch break and get right back to your day. Dysport® injections typically take 10-20 minutes, depending on your personalized treatment. The neurotoxin is injected directly into targeted facial muscles to stop repetitive movements.

Thanks to the fine needle and the gentle technique of Dr. Langdon and our aesthetic specialist Maria Koursaris, DPN, your Dysport® treatment should involve minimal discomfort. Most patients only experience a brief pinch with each injection, and numbing cream is available if needed.

Patients often receive dermal fillers at the same time to address other aging concerns and to complement their Dysport® treatment, which may make the procedure take slightly longer. Dermal fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane® can help smooth out static wrinkles, which neuromodulators aren’t able to target, and can restore lost facial volume.

Patients can immediately resume their daily routine after Dysport® treatments without any downtime. You may have minor swelling and bruising at the injection sites for a couple of days. Dr. Langdon and our aesthetic specialist, Maria, take every precaution to minimize side effects, and we’ll give you instructions for aftercare to reduce swelling.

Occasionally, patients may have a mild headache for a few hours after the injections. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication if needed. You should avoid strenuous exercise, lying down, or applying pressure to the treatment area for several hours. These could cause the neuromodulator to spread and affect your results.

For some people, Dysport® may produce slightly faster results than Botox®. The neurotoxin will take effect gradually over a few days. As your facial muscles relax, dynamic wrinkles will soften, leaving you with a smoother, more youthful appearance.

The results of Dysport® last approximately three to four months. As the neuromodulator wears off and the treated facial muscles become active again, dynamic wrinkles will start to reappear.

You can have maintenance treatments every few months as needed. Many people find that their results last longer over time with repeated treatments. If you do not see satisfactory results with Dysport® or it’s no longer working as well as it used to, we may recommend trying Botox® or Jeuveau®.

Almost anyone is a candidate for this convenient anti-aging injectable. In the hands of an experienced provider like Dr. Langdon, Dysport® is a safe and effective way to reduce wrinkles. Dysport® may be ideal for adults under 65 with moderate to severe frown lines. We may not recommend Dysport® if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions.

Although Dysport®, Botox®, and Jeuveau® are all very similar, they have a few differences, and each may work better for some patients than others. Certain wrinkles and treatment areas, such as crow’s feet, may respond better to Botox®. Dr. Langdon can help you determine the best treatment option for you during a comprehensive consultation.
