Chin Implant

Surgical Face Chin Implant

Do you dislike the way your face and neck look from the side? A weak chin is a common concern that negatively affects the facial profile. Instead of a distinct angle where your jaw meets your neck, it may look like a straight line or a slope. This can make your jawline undefined and create the appearance of a double chin

That’s why many people turn to chin implants at the Langdon Center for a stronger, more prominent chin and a balanced facial profile. This procedure is an easy, convenient way to achieve long-lasting results.

What is a Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses an implant to improve the chin’s shape and size. Also called genioplasty or mentoplasty, chin augmentation seeks to correct a weak or receding chin, an undefined jawline, or an unbalanced facial profile.

Dr. Langdon performs chin augmentation with customized implants. The implant provides volume to predictably augment the front and sides of the chin. Typically made with medical-grade silicone, anatomic implants are designed to look and feel natural. Dr. Langdon will help you choose from numerous shapes and sizes of implants to find the best fit for your facial structure and aesthetic goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure to place a chin implant is fairly quick and simple, often taking an hour or less. Dr. Langdon performs this outpatient procedure with a local anesthetic, which will completely numb the chin area. He will then make a small incision under your chin and lift up the skin to place the implant.

The implant is placed beneath the skin and muscle, immediately on the surface of the jaw bone. Dr. Langdon will close the incision after molding the implant around your jawbone for a smooth, natural-looking result.

Chin augmentation can be combined with other facial and neck procedures depending on your goals and needs. A chin implant paired with neck liposuction may benefit patients with excess submental fat. You may also have a chin implant placed during a facelift for comprehensive rejuvenation that restores facial harmony and balance.

Most people look fine the day after chin augmentation. There will be mild swelling for a few days, and the stitches beneath the chin will need to be removed after one week. You may want to take up to a week off work to rest and recover.

Dr. Langdon will give you detailed instructions for your personalized procedure. Typically, patients should avoid strenuous activities for approximately two weeks. We may recommend eating soft foods, wearing a compression garment, and keeping your head elevated for a week or two. Dr. Langdon may prescribe pain medication for the first few days to manage any discomfort.

An implant immediately improves the volume and shape of your chin. However, swelling may initially obscure the results. You’ll see improvement within a few days and final results in a few months.

The long-lasting results are the benefit of chin augmentation with an implant over alternative options like dermal fillers. Fillers typically only last a year or two, and even fat transfer may be temporary if you gain or lose weight. A chin implant is designed to last a lifetime. A properly placed, medical-grade silicone implant won’t move or dissolve. However, you can have the implant removed later if you no longer want it.

Benefits of a chin implant for your appearance include:

  • Improved balance of facial features
  • A more graceful and refined neck profile (especially if combined with liposuction of the neck or a neck lift)
  • Filling in of pre-jowl sulcus (minimizes jowls)
  • A more defined jawline

People with a weak or receding chin should consider a chin implant, which can help to restore a harmonious balance to the facial profile. Chin augmentation can also help improve the appearance of the neck and jawline, adding definition and reducing a double chin. Many people will also benefit from liposuction of the neck and jowls, a procedure that can be conveniently performed simultaneously.

Ideal candidates for a chin implant are healthy adults with realistic expectations. If you’ve previously used fillers to enhance your chin but are tired of the constant treatments, an implant can give you lifelong results.
