Active FX CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing improves sun-damaged skin and provides skin tightening without the prolonged downtime associated with traditional laser resurfacing.

At the Langdon Center, we are always seeking the latest and most effective technology to achieve the best results for our patients. We offer several options for Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing to treat fine lines and deep wrinkles, age spots, sun damage and more. These options include:

ActiveFX: This controlled superficial fractional CO2 laser peel is effective at reducing fine lines, uneven skin tone, and surface imperfections, and requires minimal downtime. ActiveFX affects a larger percentage of surface area than most fractional laser treatments and does not penetrate as deep into the skin as conventional laser resurfacing.

Enhanced ActiveFX: For clients looking for a more powerful laser resurfacing treatment, there’s the Enhanced ActiveFX CO2 laser. In both regular and Enhanced ActiveFX treatments, a laser scanner distributes the laser energy evenly over the entire face. However, the main difference in the Enhanced ActiveFX treatment is that the energy is delivered at a faster rate, which produces greater heat. As a result, the skin contracts even more than with standard fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatments, leading to greater skin tightening results.

The Enhanced ActiveFX treatment is typically done over the entire face except for the upper eyelids and the eyebrows. Because there is a significant contraction of skin, the Enhanced ActiveFX treatment will smooth the majority of facial wrinkles, fine lines, and creases.

DeepFX: This advanced fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment penetrates deeper into the skin to improve even deep wrinkles and severe acne scars.  Results can be seen even after a single treatment, making this an ideal procedure for clients who want powerful results in less time.  Final results from this procedure can be seen in three to four months.

TotalFX: Both ActiveFX and DeepFX are combined to provide superficial and deep fractional treatment, reducing acne scars, improving skin texture and tone, and reducing both fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

Results

Obvious results can be seen after just one treatment with continued improvement over time. Two to three Active FX treatments are usually recommended, separated by one to two months, to achieve optimal results.  Enhanced ActiveFX usually requires only one treatment.

Patients should expect to see a new layer of skin emerge in the days following an Enhanced ActiveFX treatment.  The recovery takes a few days longer than a regular Enhanced ActiveFX treatment; patients should expect to recover for eight to ten days after the procedure. Patients should moisturize daily during this recovery period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with downtime of only a few days. Unlike traditional laser resurfacing, in which layers of skin are removed over the entire treated area, this treatment is fractional. Small spots of laser energy treat the majority of the surface area in a typical Fractional CO2 Laser treatment. The primary advantage of the CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser is the increased contraction of treated skin that this laser wavelength produces. As explained in Dr. Langdon’s book Understanding Cosmetic Laser Surgery the CO2 laser ablates (removes) layers of skin and causes the collagen in the skin to shrink, thus producing contraction of the treated skin. Skin contraction is especially advantageous in patients who have significant sun damage and loose, wrinkled skin.

The most common areas treated with the Fractional CO2 Laser are the face and neck.

A treatment of the entire face takes approximately 90 minutes, including administration of local anesthesia.

Obvious results can be seen after just one treatment with continued improvement over time. Two to three Active FX treatments are usually recommended, separated by one to two months, in order to achieve optimal results.  Enhanced ActiveFX usually requires only one treatment.

Because this laser is ablative, there can be pinpoint spots of bleeding a few hours after the procedure; these are removed by simply cleansing the face. During the recovery period, a moisturizing ointment such as Aquaphor® is applied. Side effects usually include mild swelling and redness. Mild swelling should subside within a few days, and redness usually fades over the next few weeks. There is limited, if any, risk of infection or scarring.

People have varying degrees of sun damage and every person’s skin requires a different number of treatments for the best results. Please contact us for a specific cost.
