Non-Surgical Face PhotoFacial

Days in the sun may be fun, but they’re rarely kind to your skin. Age and sun damage leaves many people frustrated with their complexion. Dullness, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots are common complaints. For others, conditions like rosacea cause frustrating redness. BBL PhotoFacial treatments at the Langdon Center can help restore a clear, bright complexion without downtime.

What is a PhotoFacial?

BBL (BroadBand Light) Photo Rejuvenation is a noninvasive light therapy treatment that produces luminous, younger-looking skin. Commonly called a PhotoFacial, this treatment delivers Intense Pulse Light (IPL) energy through the skin’s surface to treat age spots, sun-induced freckles, signs of rosacea, birthmarks, unsightly facial veins, and other blemishes.

BBL PhotoFacials are often used as a gentler alternative to laser treatments. Though similar, the two light-based treatments have some important differences. Light therapy options like BBL and IPL devices produce scattered light in multiple wavelengths. On the other hand, a laser device uses more concentrated beams of light in a single wavelength. PhotoFacials are non-ablative and, therefore, a gentler treatment that doesn’t damage the skin’s surface.

The most common areas treated are the face, neck, and décolleté; however, these treatments can be used anywhere on the body.

Dr. Langdon often recommends PhotoFacials for the following complexion concerns:

  • Redness and rosacea
  • Birthmarks
  • Fine lines
  • Facial capillaries and spider veins
  • Age spots, sun damage, and freckles

Frequently Asked Questions

BBL therapy is one of our many options for skin rejuvenation treatments at the Langdon Center. The first step of your treatment will be a detailed consultation with Dr. Langdon or our aesthetic specialist, Maria Koursaris. They will evaluate your skin type and concerns and discuss your goals to determine which type of treatment will be most effective.

The light energy of a PhotoFacial targets pigment cells and broken capillaries within your skin, breaking them down. Your body then removes these damaged cells, reducing redness and dark spots. The light’s heat also stimulates a healing response and promotes collagen production. As a result, your complexion is clearer and brighter thanks to reduced hyperpigmentation, and your skin is healthier with increased collagen.

PhotoFacials are a popular treatment for patients with busy lifestyles because of their convenience. The procedure is quick, easy, and has no downtime. A full-face treatment can be completed in 15 minutes, though larger areas may take longer. We’ll apply a topical numbing cream or cooling gel if needed to maintain your comfort as the BBL device delivers pulses of light to your skin. You may feel warmth or a sensation similar to a rubber band snap.

A PhotoFacial treatment is quick and easy, as is the recovery afterward. Unlike laser resurfacing, BBL treatments don’t damage the surface of your skin. You can resume your daily routine immediately after a BBL PhotoFacial. Your skin may be slightly red, but most patients return to their natural skin color within 30 minutes.

In the hands of an experienced provider, PhotoFacials are safe, effective, and have minimal side effects and risks. Pigmentary skin changes, blisters, and red spots are rare but occasionally occur.

Many patients notice their skin tone is brighter and more even within two weeks of their first PhotoFacial. Though results can be seen after just one treatment, we typically recommend four to six treatments at three-week intervals for optimal benefits. Some issues, such as rosacea and significant sun damage, may require additional sessions.

Once you achieve your desired results, you’ll enjoy the improvements for many months. Most patients can preserve their results long-term with a yearly maintenance treatment. Avoiding sun exposure and wearing sunscreen is crucial for long-lasting benefits.

Patients with sun damage, redness, wrinkles, and other skin issues are strong candidates for BBL PhotoFacials. However, you should not have a BBL treatment if you have a darker skin type or have recently been tanned from sun or UV exposure.

Dr. Langdon will assess your skin type and concerns to help you determine if this is the right treatment for you. He may recommend an alternative, like microneedling, for patients with dark or tanned skin. Patients with more significant sun damage and signs of aging may benefit from laser resurfacing or a minimally invasive facelift.
