September 30, 2015

That tattoo may have seemed cool back in your younger years – but now that you’re older, you’re not exactly sure you want to sport a tattoo of your favorite band’s logo.  Or maybe your tattoo reminds you of a relationship you’re trying to forget.  Whatever the case, you want your tattoo gone…

But you’re not sure how many sessions it will take, especially since you have a colorful tattoo.

Colorful Tattoo Removal: What to Expect

At The Langdon Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in Guilford, CT, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Langdon provides innovative tattoo removal technologies that can eliminate even the most colorful tattoo.

Dr. Langdon uses a special Q-switched laser, which delivers short and intense pulses of light to the treatment area.  The PicoSure Laser is much more powerful than the typical Q-switched laser in that it delivers much more energy through faster pulses. The tattoo ink absorbs the energy, causing a breakdown in the ink’s particles.

Over time, these particles are removed via the body’s waste processes, which help to fade the tattoo faster than normal removal processes.  Using the PicoSure laser ensures that the tattoo is gone in half the time as typical laser tattoo removal processes.

For both black-and-white and colorful tattoos, Dr. Langdon estimates that it can between five to ten treatments at four to six week intervals before seeing total tattoo removal.  While this might seem like a big time commitment, each session is only ten minutes long, making this an ideal choice for someone who wants a simple approach to tattoo removal.

Tattoo removal may be mildly discomforting; many patients have compared it to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin.  However, pain tends to stop as soon as the treatment has ended.  There’s no need for downtime, as you can resume your normal activities right after treatment.  Some people do experience bruising and swelling, but that goes away after a few hours.
