What is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

June 10, 2022

Your fat removal and body contouring options have expanded to give you more choices than ever. Liposuction no longer requires weeks of recovery time, and with safe tumescent liposuction, using local anesthesia, you can return to your usual activities within a few days. If you have considered liposuction in the past but had concerns about the procedure and the recovery time, new liposuction technology makes it safer and gentler.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body using a suction technique. Common areas to undergo liposuction include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, hips, upper arms, and neck.

Traditional liposuction using general anesthesia can lead to significant bruising and swelling, and it may require several weeks of recovery time. Dr. Langdon performs a much safer, more effective type of liposuction that give you better results and much faster recovery. The key is his use of tumescent local anesthesia, which is highly effective at numbing the treated area and also greatly reduces bruising. Less bruising means less swelling and a much quicker recovery.

What is Recovery Like From Liposuction?

Using tumescent liposuction with local anesthesia, Dr. Langdon minimizes recovery time. Most people can go back to work in two or three days. You will have a “sore muscle” feeling that can be effectively minimized with over-the-counter pain relievers. You will have a compression garment to support the treated area while it heals. Most people wear this undergarment for one to two weeks.

Types of Liposuction

The Langdon Center offers several types of liposuction (all done with tumescent local anesthesia) so Dr. Langdon can choose the best one for your needs and goals. Each has advantages and disadvantages that Dr. Langdon will discuss with you when planning your procedure.

Tumescent Liposuction

Before tumescent liposuction, your surgeon injects a mixture of sterile saline and numbing agents. This process creates a cushion of fluid that expands the fat layer and separates the fat from other layers of tissue. Tumescent liposuction makes the procedure much less traumatic to the surrounding tissues, so you do not need general anesthesia.

SmartLipo™

FDA-approved SmartLipo™ uses laser energy to generate heat that liquifies fat cells. A microcannula can suction out this melted fat, requiring smaller incisions than traditional liposuction. The heat also closes off tiny blood vessels in the area to prevent bleeding and bruising. The SmartLipo™ system monitors the temperature to keep your skin comfortable at all times.

SlimLipo™

This patented laser-assisted liposuction method also works by heating and melting fat cells for easy removal. SlimLipo™ may be used in small or delicate areas where using traditional liposuction could cause injury. It requires tiny incisions for little to no visible scarring.

ProLipo™

Using two laser wavelengths, ProLipo™ breaks down fat cells using heat. It also tightens the skin from the inside by causing collagen fibers to contract. The skin-tightening properties make ProLipo™ an excellent choice for people with loose skin in the treatment area.

Renuvion ™

The state-of-the-art technology, Renuvion™ , uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to safely heat collagen fibers within the skin and subcutaneous layer to induce contraction. Renuvion treatment is usually performed immediately after liposuction.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

If you have stubborn fat that will not go away, you might be a good candidate for body sculpting with liposuction. You should be in overall good health and have reasonable expectations.

I had Dr. Langdon do my liposuction procedure on my upper & lower abdomen as well as my flanks. They were extremely accommodating to my needs as far as managing my nausea & pain. I was given nausea & pain medication as soon as I started to not feel well. I walked out feeling VERY happy with my results even before the swelling went down. Very sweet staff of nurses as well. HIGHLY recommend to anyone who’s looking to make a change to feel more comfortable in their own skin. Couldn’t be more grateful!
