What’s the Best Way to Fade an Unwanted Tattoo?

August 12, 2019

If you have a tattoo that you wish you never had, you’re not alone. It’s common for people to get a tattoo and eventually regret it. The good news is that you don’t have to live with an unwanted tattoo forever. There are special lasers that can help fade your tattoo without damaging your skin. We are pleased to offer laser tattoo removal through the PicoSure and PiQo-4 lasers. We are the only laser center in Connecticut that has both of these advanced lasers. Let’s take a closer look at how they work.

*Individual Results May Vary

The PicoSure Laser

The PicoSure laser works by emitting ultra-short bursts of energy into the skin. Unlike traditional Q-switched lasers, the PicoSure delivers much more powerful energy bursts, which are measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second), to the exact problem areas. The energy from the PicoSure laser breaks your tattoo ink into small particles so that your body can more easily eliminate them. Although treatment plans vary from patient to patient, many tattoos will fade in only a few treatments.

The PiQo-4 Laser

Known as one of the most advanced lasers available today, the PiQo-4 laser uses nanosecond and picosecond laser energy to fade all types of tattoos. It uses four different wavelengths (different than the PicoSure) and has been proven to produce up to 10 times more energy than traditional tattoo removal lasers. The high power of the PiQo4 laser enables fewer and faster treatments with minimal discomfort or side effects. Regardless of the color or size of your tattoo, the PiQo-4 is likely to conceal its appearance.

Results

While the results of these lasers will depend on a number of factors including your skin type and the location, depth, and color of your tattoo, most patients find that after clearance of the tattoo the treated area is barely noticeable. It usually blends in well with the surrounding skin. Sometimes, however, your skin pigment may be a bit darker or lighter.

Good Candidates for Laser Tattoo Removal

If you have a tattoo that you’d like to get rid of quickly, you may benefit from treatment with the PicoSure or PiQo-4 laser (or possibly both lasers). We recommend these treatments to patients who are generally healthy and dedicated to multiple treatments. A consultation can inform you whether laser tattoo removal is ideal for your aesthetic goals.

I had 3 treatments with the PicoSure laser to remove 2 black ink tattoos. The tattoos are 20 years old and located on my ankle and lower back. I previously had 12 treatments with a qswitch laser at Cornell and almost gave up as the results were poor in my case. The PicoSure laser at Dr. Langdon’s office was the exact opposite experience. There is much less pain and discomfort with a much quicker recovery time than my Cornell qswitch experience. I hardly noticed any pain after the procedure and even the next day there was no need to address a wound like I did with the Cornell qswitch treatments. The results are unbelievable and the tattoos are now greatly diminished. I anticipate 2 more treatments to completely remove the visible elements of the ink. I also feel the treatment price is fair due to the high cost of this cutting edge laser. It has been a wonderful experience and I would recommend the Langdon center to anyone removing an unwanted tattoo. I was getting very discouraged in the past and the PicoSure laser treatments gave me faith that I will finally be able to remove my tattoos.
