Non-Surgical Injectables Sculptra®

Patients love the simple convenience of dermal fillers. This quick lunch break procedure with a few small injections can reduce signs of aging and enhance your facial contours. However, one of the downsides of many dermal filler brands is their short-term results. That’s why many patients love the long-lasting, natural-looking effects of Sculptra® at the Langdon Center.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a dermal filler made with synthetic poly-L-lactic acid. This biocompatible, biodegradable material has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants. As a dermal filler, Sculptra® is popular for its more natural and long-lasting results since it works by increasing collagen production rather than adding artificial volume with gel-like fillers.

At the Langdon Center, we offer multiple types of dermal fillers to ensure we have the best option for each patient. We often recommend Sculptra® for marionette lines, smile lines, and chin wrinkles. It can also restore volume in areas that have lost facial fat, such as the cheeks, and improve the overall quality of aging skin to make it firmer and more youthful.

While hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane® use gel-like formulas to add volume, Sculptra® addresses the root cause of volume loss and aging skin: collagen. This essential fiber gives your skin its structure and support. Your body produces less of it as you age, and sun damage over time can also break down collagen fibers. By stimulating collagen production within the skin, Sculptra® gradually improves volume and structure to restore smooth, firm skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dermal fillers are a quick, simple procedure. The injection process often takes less than 30 minutes, depending on how many areas are being treated. Sculptra® is injected into the skin’s dermis in the area of fat and volume loss.

When performed by a trained physician like Dr. Langdon, Sculptra® injections cause minimal discomfort. You’ll feel a slight pinch as he carefully injects tiny amounts using an ultra-fine needle. To optimize your comfort, we can apply a local anesthetic to the treatment area prior to injecting.

Though you should see improvements within a few weeks of your first Sculptra® treatment, some patients may need a few sessions to see optimal results. Dr. Langdon will evaluate your concerns and goals to create a customized treatment plan that includes how many injections you will need.

Sculptra® doesn’t require any downtime, and you can resume your daily routine immediately after treatment. Most patients have only mild side effects that last a few days. You may have minor tenderness, bruising, and swelling at the injection sites. Most of these effects should subside within a couple of days, but some can last up to two weeks.

Though Sculptra® doesn’t require any recovery time, Dr. Langdon will give you aftercare instructions to minimize swelling and ensure optimal results. He may instruct you to massage the treatment area a few times daily for the first week to distribute the formula evenly. You may need to avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of days and be sure to protect your skin from sun exposure while it heals.

Sculptra® results aren’t immediate. After your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra® worked immediately. However, that volume increase is because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute the poly-L-lactic acid. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and your body absorbs the water, you’ll likely look the same as before the treatment.

Sculptra® takes time to gradually improve facial volume as it triggers your skin’s collagen production. You’ll start to see the benefits of your Sculptra® injections in a few weeks as collagen increases. Optimal results are typically visible four to six months after the treatment.

Most patients enjoy the effects of Sculptra® for approximately two years. This makes it much longer lasting than HA dermal fillers, which typically last six to 18 months. You can have touch-up Sculptra® treatments every couple of years to maintain your results

Sculptra® is a safe, effective injectable treatment for most healthy adults wanting to restore lost facial volume and smooth out wrinkles. It is typically best for volume loss and wrinkles around the nose, cheeks, mouth, and chin.

We may not recommend Sculptra® if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or if you have a history of irregular scarring. If Sculptra® isn’t right for you, you may still be eligible for one of our other dermal filler brands.
