Upper Lip Lift

For many patients, the upper lip tends to appear smaller as they age. Over time, the skin above the lips can gradually stretch, causing the upper lip to “turn under” and appear smaller. This stretched skin adds excessive vertical height to the area between the nose and the upper lip.

Procedure

An Upper Lip Lift is an innovative procedure designed to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip. The skin immediately beneath the nose is removed and the skin edges are stitched together, providing a physical lift. The end result is a more balanced, natural, youthful appearance, with fuller upper lips.

The procedure requires precise measurement of the vertical height between the nose and upper lip and an artfully-designed “bull horn” shaped skin excision of the necessary size to provide the desired lift. Board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Langdon will make a small incision just under the nose. The incision is curved so that it will be hidden immediately below the bottom edge of the nose. A similarly curved lower incision is made, producing a section of skin that is then removed. After the excision the skin edges are stitched together, which shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip, thus lifting and everting (turning out) the upper lip. The procedure takes 1-2 hours to perform. The procedure itself is not painful because Dr. Langdon uses a local numbing anesthetic to minimize discomfort during surgery.

Benefits of the Upper Lip Lift Include:

  • Quick results
  • Minimal risk of visible scars
  • Lifelong enhancement of the upper lip
  • Improved lip aesthetics

Results

The result is an upper lip that appears fuller. This fuller look should persist for many years; for many patients the results are lifelong.

Following the procedure, patients can go home for a minimal recovery period and can return to work after 3-4 days. Some swelling can be expected during the first 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Patients will need to return to The Langdon Center after 7-10 days to have their sutures removed.
