What is Smart Lipo (SmartLipo® Triplex®)?
SmartLipo® Triplex® by Cynosure® is a laser-assisted liposuction procedure for body contouring. Three wavelengths of laser energy liquefy the targeted fat cells, making them easier to remove and minimizing side effects and recovery. SmartLipo® can be used almost anywhere on the body, including the:
- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Arms
- Neck (double chin)
- Male breasts (gynecomastia)

Am I a Good Candidate for SmartLipo®?
It’s important to realize that SmartLipo® and other body sculpting treatments are not a replacement for weight loss. They are only intended to remove small, localized fat deposits that have been resistant to exercise and dieting.
Good candidates for SmartLipo® are healthy, already at or near their ideal body weight, and have good skin elasticity. SmartLipo® does help tighten the skin but is not effective for significant skin laxity and sagging. Older patients and those with certain medical conditions may not be eligible for this treatment. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Langdon will assess your condition and goals to help you determine if SmartLipo® is right for you.
How Does SmartLipo® Work?
Like liposuction, SmartLipo® involves breaking down and suctioning out unwanted fat. Dr. Langdon will make a small incision to insert a cannula, delivering thermal energy to melt the targeted fat. The broken-down fat is then suctioned out through the cannula. At the same time, the laser’s heat causes collagen fibers to contract, tightening the surrounding skin.
A SmartLipo® procedure typically takes one to two hours, depending on the treatment area. Dr. Langdon performs this procedure with local anesthesia.

What to Expect After SmartLipo®
Using a laser to melt fat before removing it allows for less tissue trauma and reduces recovery time. You can expect some soreness, swelling, and bruising in the treatment area, but these should be easily manageable and will soon subside. Most patients return to light activities in just two to three days. You’ll need to wear a compression garment for the first week after treatment.
Since SmartLipo® suctions out the targeted fat, results are immediate. However, swelling may initially obscure them. You’ll see results within two weeks, which may continue to improve for several months. SmartLipo® results are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight.
I went back for the check up and the doc said yes, it was uneven, and they would do a “touch up” for free. Yay! It was essentially the same procedure, but much less painful and leaky. Barely any post op recovery time except for one day of leaking (you can squeeze out a lot in the shower by sort of squeegee-ing your area and having the fluid leak out the holes, but it’s not for those who are squeamish). We’ll see if this fixes the asymmetry. I look good, though! I’m very glad I had this done.
