What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction removes localized, subcutaneous fat (the “pinchable” fat under the skin, not the deeper visceral fat around organs) to improve proportion and silhouette. Using tiny incisions, your surgeon guides a micro-cannula to gently suction fat from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and chin/neck.

At The Shoreline Center, we favor tumescent local anesthesia to minimize bleeding/bruising and speed recovery. Think precision body sculpting, not weight loss.

Also, when the goal is not just reduction but shaping and definition, we may use a liposculpture approach, selectively removing and blending fat to refine transitions (e.g., waist contour, lower-abdominal lines, jawline) for a naturally athletic look

How Much Fat Can Be Removed by Liposuction?

There’s no one-size-fits-all number. Many outpatient references cite ~5 liters as a commonly discussed planning threshold, but some patients safely require less and others can be candidates for more, based on health, anatomy, areas treated, total operative time, and overall plan. What matters most is proportion and safety, not chasing a number on the scale.

During your consultation, Dr. Langdon and Dr. Sarhan will examine your goals, skin quality, and fat distribution, and explain so you know exactly what’s being measured. We also discuss whether to do everything in one session or stage treatment for optimal safety and results.

Liposuction Techniques Available at The Shoreline Center

Most procedures here use tumescent local anesthesia and micro-cannulas; when beneficial, we add energy-assisted tools for finesse. Patients also receive relaxation sedation for a calm, drowsy feeling without loss of consciousness.

Tumescent Liposuction

  • What it is: The area is infused with tumescent solution (lidocaine + epinephrine + saline).
  • Why it helps: Profound numbing + vessel constriction (epinephrine) = less bleeding/bruising and comfortable sculpting, often without general anesthesia.
  • How fat is removed: A micro-cannula suctions fat via tiny openings; the approach supports smoother results and shorter downtime.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

  • What it is: A slender laser fiber (typically 1064–1470 nm) emulsifies fat before suction.
  • Why we use it: In select candidates, especially smaller zones like chin/neck or arms, LAL can aid removal and may offer mild skin contraction.
  • Still surgery: Small incisions, brief recovery; significant laxity may require a different approach.

SmartLipo™ Triplex®

  • How it works: Laser liquefies targeted fat, removed via liposuction. Temperature monitoring helps keep energy even and avoid excess heat at the skin.
  • Bonus: May reduce the appearance of cellulite and encourage collagen contraction for subtle tightening in suitable areas.

ProLipo

SlimLipo™

  • What it is: Diode-laser sculpting that “melts” fat through tiny incisions before removal.
  • Often helpful for: Upper arms, lower abdomen, inner/anterior thighs, and select male chest cases (true glandular gynecomastia may need additional techniques).
  • Goal: Minimal downtime with refined contouring in the right patient.

How we choose: Devices don’t drive your plan, your anatomy and goals do. We select the approach that best delivers safe, natural-looking results.

How Liposuction Works (Step by Step)

1) Mapping & Marking

We start with photos and on-skin markings to plan symmetry, proportion, and smooth transitions.

2) Local (Tumescent) Anesthesia & Infiltration

A dilute anesthetic solution numbs tissue and “inflates” the fat layer for even removal. Epinephrine temporarily shrinks blood vessels, significantly reducing bleeding/bruising. We avoid the risks of general anesthesia and keep you comfortable with relaxation sedation.

3) Micro-Cannula Access (Tiny Incisions)

We use very small, well-hidden openings to insert a slender cannula. Smaller access and micro-instruments help minimize swelling/bruising and support a faster recovery.

4) Layered Sculpting

Fat is removed in thin, controlled passes for an even surface and natural curves, reducing the risk of lumpiness or ridging associated with older, more aggressive methods. Energy-assist (e.g., laser liposuction) may be added when it benefits your case.

5) Closure & Compression

Entry points close with 1–2 sutures (or adhesive strips). A compression garment manages swelling and supports your new contour.

6) Recovery

Most cases take a few hours depending on areas. Patients describe pressure/tugging, not sharp pain, and go home the same day and goes back to work in two-three days.

Areas Liposuction Can Treat

Lipo targets subcutaneous (pinchable) fat, not visceral fat. Popular zones include:

  • Chin/Neck : Enhances jawline definition; brief recovery with a chin strap.
  • Arms: Slims upper-arm fullness for a toned profile.
  • Abdomen & Flanks: Commonly combined for a balanced waistline.
  • Thighs: Streamlines leg line and hip contour; symmetry is key.
  • Back/Bra Roll, Knees, Buttocks: Focused refinement where appropriate.

Recovery & What to Expect on the Scale

  • Day 1–3: Compression garment on; short walks encouraged. A small amount of drainage from tiny entry sites is normal for 24–48 hours.
  • Week 1–2: Swelling peaks then starts to ease; many return to desk work within several days to 1 week.
  • Weeks 3–6: Noticeable shape change as swelling subsides; gradual return to exercise as advised.
  • Months 3–6: Final contour refines as tissues settle.

You’ll typically see modest pound changes but clear improvements in contour and clothing fit, especially once swelling resolves. A practical tip our surgeons share: by 6–12 weeks, keep your weight at least as low as the amount of fat removed , and a few extra pounds lost can synergize with your result.

How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?

Fat cells removed by liposuction don’t grow back. The fat cells that remain can still enlarge or shrink with weight changes, so keeping a stable weight is the single best way to maintain your result. Skin quality will continue to evolve with age, sun, and lifestyle, so we’ll also talk about realistic long-term maintenance at your visit.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Most healthy adults who want to refine specific, stubborn areas not lose overall body weight are good candidates for liposuction. Think of it as precision body sculpting, not a weight-loss procedure.

You’re likely a strong candidate if you:

  • Are near your healthy weight but have pinchable, subcutaneous fat that resists diet/exercise.
  • Have good skin elasticity (or only mild laxity).
  • Can follow short-term aftercare (compression, activity adjustments).
  • Keep realistic goals focused on shape and proportion, not the scale.
